HUCK FINN PARK MEETINGS
A committee of interested volunteers meet once a month, join the blog or send an email to skateleadville@yahoo.com to be notified of meetings if you would like to attend.
GET INVOLVED
The Huck Finn Park is one of Lake County’s larger projects slated to become a reality in 2012. Lake County, the City of Leadville, and numerous individuals are in support of this project, but just thinking about this great idea isn’t enough. This is a community endeavor, we need your talents, skills, fundraising and other types of ideas – whatever you can offer to keep the Huck Finn Park on schedule for the 2012 opening. With this in mind, we welcome you to the project, and with your energy you can help us bring this project to fruition.
Email us your ideas, suggestions, and how you might want to contribute to the Huck Finn Park Project. You can also stay informed by signing up for our blog. You will receive notices by email of the project’s events and progress.
PARK LOCATION and INFORMATION
Through surveys and discussion, Huck Finn Park was chosen as the skatepark location. The skatepark will serve as an anchor to some of Huck Finn’s revitalization. Ice skaters and tennis players have also voiced their needs, and as a result, the skatepark will partner with these other groups to work on some common goals. These combined groups are known as the HUCK FINN PARK PROJECT.
WHAT IS BEING PLANNED:
- Concrete Skatepark – We have 21,000 square feet of space to design the skatepark. Formalized plans will determine how large the skatepark will be, and how much might be dedicated towards landscaping. The skatepark will be open year round to skateboarders, bikes, scooters, in-line skaters, etc; but users will have to bring their own shovels if the want to use it during the winter. Snowboarders and skiers may also use the park in the winter to build kickers to some of the park’s obstacles such as rails, curbs, etc.
- Tennis Courts – The tennis courts have definitely seen better days, and its time to get them back into use. The two courts on the western side of the park will be repaired and resurfaced.
- Ice Rink Area: A New Building! – Ice skating in Lake County has become very popular and the shack is getting crowded! Since the whole Huck Finn Park area is in need of new bathroom facilities, it has been proposed to create a new building in place of the Ice Skating Warming Hut to serve this need as well as some new ones. The new building will be designed to house a larger warming area for the ice skaters and skate rental. In addition to this, the building will house a heated storage area for the Zamboni and sweeper. Lastly, new restrooms will be included which all park users will have access to year round.
- Sidewalk – A sidewalk will be constructed from the skatepark to the new multipurpose ice rink building. Signs will be installed to point out the direction of the new restrooms.
SURVEYS!
Express your knowledge and opinions! Currently, we have a survey that we would love to have you fill out. The Skatepark Survey is for our user groups (skaters, bikers, etc.) This survey will ask the user information about other skateparks. The questions deal with park terrain, operations, and overall park impressions. This is a very important survey, and we want to build the right facility for our community; therefore your comments are very important in the planning process. So, check these out. We’re waiting to hear from YOU! If you need more information about the skatepark building process or how people utilize these facilities, go to our skatepark builders page for more information.

Thanks for your participation and input!
The video below is of the Rail Bender Skate and Tennis Park in Parker, Colorado. Although their project is a lot larger than ours, Parker demonstrates an excellent example of combining skateboarding and tennis courts within the same park area.
