Chili Blast Brings Food
and Fun to Finn Fundraiser

To generate a little winter heat and crackle for Lake County recreation, the public is invited to the Huck Finn Chili Blast at the Leiter Street Ice Rink on Saturday, February 18. The Chili Blast, sponsored by the Evergreen Land Co., will allow attendees to sample the community’s finest chili, ice skate under the lights and learn more about the Huck Finn Park Project.
The event kicks off at 5 p.m. and the $7 entry fee ($25 for a family of four) includes chili tasting, bread, hot chocolate and make your own s’mores over a blazing bonfire. Entry also includes admission to the ice rink and skate rental.
Any and all are welcome to enter the Chili Contest where the top three winners will be awarded original pottery bowls designed and donated by Marjorie Westermann. Entrants need to drop off a crock pot of prepared chili at the Ice Rink Warming House by 4 p.m. on the day of the event. For an entry packet and/or more information, contact Amber at the Lake County Recreation Department at 719-486-7486. There is no cost to enter the Chili competition and all entrants will receive complimentary entrance to the event.
The Huck Finn Project is a multi-faceted effort to revitalize the Huck Finn Park with a 21,000 sq. ft. concrete skate park, 
refurbished tennis courts and new warming hut and ice maintenance building. Lake County’s Zamboni, which needs a home next to the rink, will be on display and hopefully grooming the ice for the evening. Nearly $200,000 has been raised toward the $870,000 cost of the project.
“All proceeds from the Chili Blast will go to the Huck Finn Project,” said Coordinator Carrie Mallozzi. “However, we really just hope people will come out to enjoy a fun evening and learn more about the plans for the park.”
